Outstanding Senior Award

Courtney Norjen

Courtney Marie Norjen ’14 Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences was presented with the Outstanding Senior Award at the college’s commencement ceremony in recognition of her outstanding academics, extracurricular activities, work experience, and communication skills. Norjen was a Schreyer Scholar and graduated with a grade-point average higher than 3.8.

During her time at Penn State, she performed extensive undergraduate research, assisting in the lab of Associate Professor of Biology Tracy Langkilde to analyze video of wood frog behavior and morphology, and conducting PCR and gel electrophoresis to examine antibiotic resistance to E. coli in poultry and livestock at the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory.

Norjen, a native of Ellicott City, Md., participated in a variety of extracurricular activities throughout her undergraduate career, including acting as president of the Pre-Vet Club, co-chairing the club’s THON efforts, serving on the Schreyer Honors College student council, and volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.

She devoted her summers to study-abroad and volunteer experiences, venturing to Belize in 2012 to the Institute for Sustainable International Studies, the Belize Zoo, and the Belize Bird Rescue to assist large animal and wildlife veterinarians. Norjen also worked as a veterinary assistant at Paradise Animal Hospital in Catonsville, Md., and as a student exhibit guide at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
