Supporting Private Forests

To serve the more than 600,000 private forest landowners in Pennsylvania, the college has created the Center for Private Forests.

Center director Jim Finley, Ibberson Professor of Forest Resources, says, “We intend to focus outreach and research on the stewardship of private forests and, through the process, to create collaborative learning opportunities for students and stakeholders.”

Faculty and staff involved in the center will cut across several departments and include agricultural and natural-resource economists, forest scientists, rural sociologists, environmental scientists, biologists, and others.

The center will aim to address issues of forest parcelization, sustainable forest management, taxation, and ecosystem services. Building a commitment now to address these and other issues will help ensure the flow of benefits and values from private forests.
