2015 – Looking Forward

Posted: December 19, 2014

After tearing down the old calendar it is time to start a new one, and to take a fresh look at some of the projects on the horizon.

Many of the changes implemented in 2014 pave the way for enhanced services to become available in 2015.  Most exciting may be the possibility of VOIP phone communications and the introduction of AD20 compliant wireless network access in your offices – with options for wireless internet access for both employees and visitors.

SharePoint is scheduled for a significant upgrade, bringing the important document repository into a newer version and bringing some new features.  You can help make this transition go more smoothly and quickly by trimming out old/unused documents before the upgrade.

We will continue working with you to upgrade your network components and ISP service as well as upgrading/replacing servers at their end-of-life – which means that many, many offices will be playing host to teams of IT staff delivering and upgrading your IT devices.

We will continue to upgrade network gear at University Park, too.  It won’t matter how quickly your equipment allows you to reach Penn State if your network traffic bottle-necks on arrival – it takes high quality hardware on both ends of the wire to get the best service.

During this next year we also expect to complete a search for and hire an IT Director for the College of Ag Sciences.  While our department and our college have prospered under the interim leadership of Sherry Crum and Ed Zuech, we are looking forward to having a full-time director providing vision, leadership and resources.
