Looking for a quick way to add documents or pictures to a SharePoint Document or Picture Library? Need to create folders and organize documents or pictures in a library? SharePoint provides the ability to open a document or picture library in Windows Explorer where you can create new folders and use the cut, copy, paste, drag and drop tools to organize files.

And, it is SUPER simple to do:

  1. Find Internet Explorer on your computer.
  2. Open the document or picture library
  3. Click the Library tab at the top to open the ribbon.
  4. Select the Open with Explorer option to open Windows Explorer in a new window
  5. Create new folders as desired.
  6. Drag and drop files as needed.
  7. When finished, close the Windows Explorer window.

NOTE: In some cases, you experience a delay in opening a Library in Explorer view or it may be slow to perform some actions (such as copying and renaming files). The good news is there is an Internet Explorer setting that should improve the performance of Explorer View.

If you are experiencing delays with the SharePoint Explorer View, try the following:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu choose Internet Options.
  3. Select the Connections tab.
  4. Click the LAN Settings button.
  5. Verify that the Automatically Detect Settings check box IS NOT checked.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Close Internet Explorer.
  9. Open Internet Explorer and re-open your SharePoint Library in Explorer view.
