Ilse Huerta is a doctoral candidate in Agricultural and Extension Education with dual-degree in International Agriculture and Development. Her dissertation project focuses on Hispanic/Latinx farmers, aspiring farmers and operators in Pennsylvania, and their relationship with Penn State Extension. She has conducted interviews with individuals from both groups in order to promote improved extension programming for Hispanic/Latinx growers.

Since Fall 2017 and along with Emma Rosenthal, a plant pathology doctoral candidate, Ilse co-chairs a working team of faculty and extension educators in the College of Agricultural Sciences that encourage research, teaching and extension for Hispanic/Latinx agriculturalists and their families.

This spring Ilse was honored with three awards for her work, which supports Extension programming, diversity and international work.

  • 2019 Evans Family Award for Graduate Student Extension Achievement
  • 2019 William Henson Student Diversity Achievement Award
  • 2019 Ardeth and Norman Frisbey International Graduate Student Award

The first two awards were presented at the Gamma Sigma Delta Celebration of Excellence on March 28. Ilse received the Frisbey International award from President Barron at the Graduate Students Award Luncheon on April 11.
