Project summary: The Center for Security Research and Education Grant Program (CSRE) aims to provide seed funding for innovative approaches to security threats. The CRSE awarded a grant to Ruth Mendum and an interdisciplinary team working on food, biomass energy, water at the household levelfor refugees and host community members of the Turkana County including the refugee camp (Kakuma) and the integrated settlement (Kalobeyei) in northwestern Kenya. This program takes a transdisciplinary approach by addressing issues of gender, security, design, energy, and agriculture within the region. Through in-depth household investigations and focus group discussions this program investigates the conditions under which refugees and host community members can improve food and energy security in the vulnerable environment.
