The "Sharkasi Family Student Research Endowment in Food Science" recently was created with a $150,000 pledge by 2009 Outstanding Alumnus, Dr. Tawfik Y. Sharkasi and his wife, Magda Fehema-Sharkasi. Dr. Sharkasi graduated from Penn State in 1984 with a doctorate in Food Science, and his wife Magda graduated from Penn State in 1983 from the College of Liberal Arts. This endowment was created to support undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors in the Department of Food Science.

Throughout Tawfik's 25 years of experience in food management and research and development, world-renowned companies such as Nestle, Kraft and PepsiCo have benefitted from his industry expertise. A member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the American Cocoa Research Institute, he holds five U.S. patents for food technologies. He was recently promoted to the newly created position of Vice President, Innovation-Asia Pacific Region for Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company.
