Learn more about one of the many active organizations within the College of Ag Sciences-- the Dairy Science Club!

The Dairy Science Club boasts being “one of the most active student organizations at Penn State,” focusing on “education, public service and fun!”

What is the Dairy Science Club all about? An interview with club president Heidi revealed more. The goal of the Dairy Science Club is to serve the dairy industry and develop leadership qualities in our club members through: Industry and public service, campus dairy promotion events, youth development and education, membership education and recognition, fundraising, and social activities and interactions.” Members vary from students who were practically born in a barn to those who have never been near cows. Most are interested in dairy cows, yet some are more interested in the dairy food side of dairy science.

Club activities are numerous and provide members many opportunities to get involved! Activities include the Osteochallenge Walk/Run, the Nittany Lion Fall Classic Holstein Consignment Sale, a Holiday Cheesebox Sale, the Dairy Days Cow Camp, Meet-a-Cow Day, a Spring Judging Contest, and the Dairy Exposition fitting and showmanship competition (in which members can gain hands-on experience working with the Penn State dairy cows!)

A professional activity that members can participate in is the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) Annual Meeting. Social events for club members include go-karting and a spring trip! This year the club is venturing to Ireland, where they will be learning about the dairy industry, related dairy businesses, and exploring the culture.

The club also has won numerous awards! The Dairy Judging Team earned 3rd place at the National Intercollegiate Contest with three All-Americans. Also, at the ADSA annual meeting this year, the club placed 2nd in Outstanding Club, nationally. The club also earned the title of ADSA National Quiz Bowl Champions, 2009-2012.

Heidi encourages all interested students to check out the club! She urges students to join in order “to network within the industry, and to make friends with other students who have a dairy interest.”
