Penn State defines flexible work as an overarching term that encompasses work arrangements best suited to the needs of the University with consideration for the employee in their effort to balance the demands of work and life.

Staff

  • Staff have a critical role in the day-to-day operations of our college and should be available and reachable during business hours. Supervisors should notify staff of any required in-person days due to meetings, conferences, on-site events, etc. Flexible work arrangements should be reviewed annually to address any concerns or challenges.
  • Employees who supervise 3 or more direct reports and are permitted to work fully remotely must schedule quarterly in-person visits to University Park or their applicable Extension location(s) to meet with their teams and other college personnel. This includes supervisors of 3 or more direct reports who are approved to work fully remotely out-of-state. The employee will cover the costs of these visits. The unit is not permitted to cover these costs or reimburse the employee for the costs of these visits.
  • Remote work remains contingent on university approval based on the status of the employee and the place of residence as well as the employee having a satisfactory performance in annual evaluations.
  • There are different types of flexible work arrangements:
  • 100% remote work (may require occasional on-site work).
  • 100% remote work OUT OF STATE
  • Hybrid Schedule – A combination of time spent working remotely and in a university-controlled office
  • Staggered start and end times
  • For Flexible Work Arrangements not specified above, please consult with your assigned HRC.

Please complete the FWA form and send it to your assigned HRC. All FWAs must be approved by your HRC before submitting the FWA request in Workday.

Faculty

Remote work for full-time faculty positions is subject to review and approval by Faculty Affairs. The expectation of faculty positions is to be on-campus, and requests will be carefully reviewed. Please visit the Faculty Affairs website for more information:

Postdoctoral Scholars

Please work with your assigned HR consultant for any Postdoc requests for flexible work arrangements.
