The College of Agricultural Sciences annually awards the Dr. William Henson Diversity Achievement Award to faculty, extension educators, and staff. The award winners will receive a certificate of achievement, recognition on a permanent plaque mounted in the lobby of the Agricultural Administration Building, and a $500.00 award. The award winners will be publicly recognized at an appropriate College event, as well as, in other media formats.


To recognize distinctive and outstanding teaching, research, extension or creative work that advances diversity in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Diversity is the variety of cultures, world views, values and personal experiences that may result from differences in race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, geographic region, disability, and more. All full-time College and extension faculty, staff, technical service staff, and administrators are eligible to receive the award. Up to three awards will be given each year. One of the awards will be targeted to "Early Career" employees (five years or less employment in the College). After a two year wait previous winners will be eligible for the award if the new nomination describes diversity activities different from the previous award. Diversity activities/experiences included in the nomination must have occurred prior to March 2019. Employees must be in good standing to be considered for the Diversity Achievement Award.

Criteria for Nominees

The following criteria will be considered when selecting the award recipient:

  • Demonstrated understanding of, appreciation for, and advocacy of diversity issues.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment, in which the values of diversity and multiculturalism are understood, developed, and promoted.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principal of diversity through hiring practices, sensitivity in developing teaching, research, extension or professional development agendas, and/or other professional activities which include relationships with or promote understanding of multicultural populations.

Nomination Submission Details

Nominations may be made by students, faculty, staff, extension educators, administrators, alumni or clientele of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Submit a letter of nomination and one letter of support using the online nomination form below. The nomination letter should not exceed 900 words. Nomination materials should address the selection criteria and clearly describe the nominee's contribution to College diversity effort. Links to other supplemental materials can be embedded within the nomination letter or letters of support. Do not include other separate documents with the nomination.

Nomination Deadline

All nominations should be submitted by March 1, 2019. The award winner will be recognized at an appropriate college event.

Selection Process

A sub-committee of the Diversity Coordinating Council will evaluate nominations, select finalists, and recommend three award winners to the Dean.

Nominations may be made by students, faculty, staff, extension educators, alumni or clientele of the College of Agricultural Sciences.

The Diversity Achievement Award has been named after Dr. William L. Henson, who retired from the College in 1999.
