Course Overview

The capstone project (AGRO 596) in the MPS-TM graduate program provides an opportunity for each student to pursue a study that is specific to his or her interests and circumstances. For example, a golf course superintendent might wish to examine all aspects of water management—including irrigation, natural precipitation, and drainage—on a specific golf course. A study of this nature would require observations of surface flow onto, through, and off of the course, measurements of infiltration and percolation of water through the turf/soil profile, opportunities for enhancing surface and internal drainage through the installation of appropriate devices and system components, assessment of methods (e.g., wetting agents, cultivation techniques, soil modification and topdressing) for improving infiltration, assessments of the quality and quantity of water available for irrigation, evaluations of the efficacy of existing and potential irrigation systems, and the appropriate implementation of an irrigation program for optimizing turf quality. The thesis-like report resulting from such a study should be suitable for publication or as a source document for one or more publishable papers.

While one should plan to register for AGRO 596 during the final semester of the MPS-TM graduate program, the initiation of the capstone project should occur as early as possible to provide sufficient time for planning and organizing the study, systematically gathering information and data, and composing and submitting the report by the middle of the semester in which AGRO 596 is taken.

Please begin planning your capstone project at your earliest opportunity. Feel free to propose and discuss your ideas for your project with me at your earliest convenience. Once you have decided on the specific nature of your project, you should submit a formal proposal for your project. This proposal should be submitted to me as an email attachment.

The final paper is worth 100 points. The turnaround time for graded assignments is generally one week or less.

Minimum Skills

  • You should have an understanding of basic computer usage (creating folders/directories, switching between programs, formatting and backing up media, accessing the internet).
  • You must be able to conduct word processing tasks such as creating, editing, saving, and retrieving documents.
  • You must be able to use a web browser to open web pages, download files, and search the internet.
  • You must be able to use an e-mail program to send and receive messages and to attach and download documents/files.
  • You must be able to download and install programs or plug-ins from the internet.

Students are expected to log in regularly to keep up to date with announcements, discussions, etc. The class will progress at a regular pace throughout the semester and there are specific due dates and times for assignments, etc.

Course Availability

Your course will be available to you beginning the first day of class and will remain open for one year. After one year the course will close.
