Ag Live Surpasses Fundraising Goal for Sixth Consecutive Year

Ag Live 2012 held on November 24, raised more than $35,000 exceeding last year's proceeds by $10,000 and this year's goal by $5,000. Proceeds directly benefit the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society's student scholarships, internship awards, and other student and alumni programs.
Agriculture Future of America Leadership Conference -- Student Perspective

From November 1-4, I spent four days in Kansas City, Missouri for the Agriculture Future of America Leadership Conference. Being selected out of the top 550 student agricultural leaders in the U.S., I was honored to attend the conference as an Ag Advocate and as a student leader in the College of Agricultural Sciences with five fellow Penn Staters. Little did I know, it would be one of the most inspirational experiences of my life and I would meet so many outstanding Ag Alumni along the way.

On November 19, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences honored five graduates with the Outstanding Alumni Award and one alumnus with the Outstanding Recent Alumni Award. The award recognizes alumni for their achievements and provides opportunities for recipients to interact with the college's faculty, students and other alumni.

On Friday November 9, 2012, the Ag Alumni Society invited Dr. MeeCee Baker '82, '94 Ph.D. Ag Education and five students to speak on her career path and journey in agriculture. While studying at Penn State, Baker credits her professors encouraging her to pursue education to teach agriculture in the classroom.

One would say that Kirk Sattazahn is a busy guy. Sattazahn was born into the dairy business, coming from a family that managed their own farm. He had to make a choice between taking over the family dairy farm or continuing his education. He choose Agribusiness Management and graduated with a B.S. in 1994 and now is the Director of Marketing with Select Sire Power.

Merl Filler is not your average fire fighter. He is a smoke jumper; a highly skilled and trained individual who parachutes from a plane into deep forests to extinguish threatening wildfires. Inspired by the wonders of Pennsylvania forests, Merl Filler chose Wood Utilization at Penn State. He has extensive experience in forestry and its various pathways.

Recently, I had the honor of meeting Harry Sebring '73 Animal Sciences in class. Mr. Sebring was the guest speaker in 'Careers in Animal Science' class where he shared his experiences in the equine industry with Morgan horses. Owner of Sebring Stables, he started his business from the barn floor up, and has grown it into a prestigious family-owned operation.

There are a lot of folks involved in waste management in the dairy industry. Foundry, machining, engineering, environmental management, and salesmen—the list goes on and on. It takes experts to turn wastes into a reusable product so that our world can be sustainable. In order to market these products, businesses need sales representatives to talk with farmers about how to make their farms more sustainable and have reusable waste.

I was delighted to hear a familiar voice outside my office yesterday afternoon, Sarah Peterson '11 IID, surprised me with a wonderful visit. Sarah was the recipient of the Ag Alumni Society Outstanding Senior Award and an intern in the Alumni Relations office her senior year. Currently, Sarah is a high school Math teacher with Teach for America in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her school is on spring break and she is home visiting her family in Robesonia, PA and friends at Penn State.

Big Ten Ag Alumni come together in Washington, D.C.

On February 27, more than 200 Big Ten Ag Alumni came together at the American Farm Bureau Building in Washington, D.C. for a dessert reception. Alumni from Penn State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin united on behalf of land-grant institutions. The evening was filled with fellowship and networking with college deans, administrators, alumni, friends, and students.

University to Honor Alumnus with Distinguished Alumni Award

The Penn State Board of Trustees on Jan. 20 selected Earl K. Harbaugh as one of seven Penn State alumni to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award, the University's highest award for an individual. Mr. Harbaugh of St. Charles, Ill., is founder and president of Ditch Witch Midwest in Carol Stream, Ill. He earned his bachelor's degree in general agriculture in 1961.
Support students during finals week

The Alumni Society is continuing a student gift bag project that was started several years ago to help students get through finals week. We are looking for donations from alumni, friends of the college, and industry partners to help us continue this effort by donating snacks, candy, pens, pencils, etc. In addition to supporting College of Agricultural Sciences' students, individuals and companies that donate have an opportunity to promote their name and products directly to students and alumni.
