Tools & Logistical Ideas to Make Your Farm Market Profitable

Posted: March 16, 2015

This is an upcoming educational opportunity targeted at mid-to-top level retail farm market and agritourism enterprise management. PA-WAgN will be presenting a separate event in late April in Blair County on Farm Markets.

We are using a farm (http://countrybarnmarket.com/ ) in Lancaster as our demonstration/laboratory case.

This all started from a two hour problem solving meeting with the farm owner, farm operations manager, market manager and lead market clerk. We were going around and around covering a myriad of issues. It finally occurred to me the primary concern was profitability – pricing strategies, pricing tools, market SOP’s, when to drop an enterprise, and how to decide where to put a capital investment. I suggested we have an at-market event, get everybody that cared together, and work on the issues. After warning them of the required vulnerability on their part to get the most benefit from this activity – they all agreed this was a good idea and asked us to proceed.

Agenda:

9:00 – 9:30 morning refreshments

9:00 – 10:00 self-guided tour of market, agri-tainment, and grounds with staff on hand to answer our questions

10:00 – 12:00 panel discussion in the barn; three retail farm marketers will review the pricing strategies and pricing tools implemented at their enterprises followed by Questions & Answers.

12:00 – 1:00 lunch catered by Country Barn

1:00 – 2:30 determining the profitable areas of a farm business

2:30 – 3:30 “What questions did you come with that were not addressed?” Wrap up.
