PPEM 225: Mushroom Cultivation (Spring 2018)

Pennsylvania's growers account for nearly 2/3 of the US total mushroom production.

PPEM 225 Mushroom Cultivation introduces fungi and briefly describes their biology and importance in nature. The majority of this course will then cover all aspects of growing mushrooms, including substrate preparation, sanitation, spawn and spawning, crop management, and harvesting. An explanation of the history of mushroom production and current U.S. and global production information will be covered. Lectures will take place in 201 Buckhout Lab and laboratories will typically take place at the Mushroom Research Center on campus. We will schedule one Saturday field trip to visit several commercial mushroom farms in southeast Pennsylvania. Though this trip is not mandatory, it will be a good chance to view all aspects of commercial mushroom farming.

By the end of the course, you will:

  1. Have a better understanding of fungi.
  2. Understand the button mushroom production process and have a knowledge of mushroom diseases.
  3. Understand shiitake and oyster mushroom production practices.

Exam Policy

Experience indicates that poor attendance in lecture and other class activities is directly related to poor performance on exams. Exams are based on information obtained from lecture, discussions, and assigned readings.

Exams are scheduled during class times. Make-up exams will be allowed only if the student has a valid excuse from their academic advisor. Make-up exams must be arranged before the exam period and will be scheduled for students with valid reasons. Students missing an exam without a valid excuse will receive a grade of zero for that exam. Unusual circumstances affecting exams must be discussed with the instructor prior to the scheduled exam.
