C:N Ratio of Cover Crops

Our initial findings suggest that the C:N ratio of cover crops incorporated before your cash crop can play an important role in nitrogen availability for that cash crop. This figure illustrates the range of C:N ratio for each monoculture and mixture in our study, including a comparison of mixtures planted at the research station versus those planted at on-farm research sites. Our research station site is a less mature organic system (in transition to organic) with lower organic matter and residual nutrient availability than the on-farm sites, which likely influenced the higher C:N of the research station mixtures.
