Joy Beam, of Elverson, attended the conference last year and was impressed by the exposure to ag industry professionals the event offered. She is eager to return with six other students in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

Perhaps best known as AFA, the group works to develop agricultural sciences students' professionalism while boosting their familiarity with companies and providing a group of business people in the agricultural industry with whom they can network.

"After attending the AFA Leaders' Conference last fall, I realized the value that the program could offer to Penn State students, grooming them to be agricultural leaders," she said. "However, the fact that I was the only student attending from Penn State made it clear that students here did not know about the opportunities available to them."

Students attending can dine with company recruiters, hear from panels of industry professionals about current issues and events in agriculture, and talk to representatives of nearly 100 agriculture companies at the "opportunity fair" -- "all while building a nationwide network of peers who will one day become coworkers," Beam added.

Also attending the conference are Natalie Keller, of Sinking Spring, a sophomore Food Science major; Emily Newman, of Abbottstown, a junior Environmental Resource Management major; Emily Pennock, of Bryn Mawr, a junior Plant Sciences major; Monica Caparosa, of Butler, a junior Food Science major; Casey Hall, of Shelocta, a senior Biological Engineering major; and Anh Tran, of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a senior Food Science major.
