Outstanding Alumnus supports undergraduate research in food science

Dr. Tawfik Y. Sharkasi and his wife, Magda Fehema-Sharkasi, have pledged $150,000 to create the Sharkasi Family Student Research Endowment in Food Science.

Dr. Sharkasi, who received an Outstanding Alumnus Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences in 2009, graduated from Penn State in 1984 with a doctorate in Food Science, and his wife graduated in 1983 from the Penn State College of Liberal Arts. This endowment was created to support undergraduate research opportunities with faculty mentors in the Department of Food Science.

Throughout Tawfik’s 25 years of experience in food management and research and development, world-renowned companies such as Nestle, Kraft and PepsiCo have benefitted from his industry expertise. A member of the Institute of Food Technologists and the American Cocoa Research Institute, he holds five U.S. patents for food technologies. He recently was promoted to the newly created position of vice president for innovation for the Asia Pacific Region of Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.
