Wireless Connectivity in County Offices

Posted: December 15, 2015

Let’s play Jeopardy! Ag IT for $1,000, please Alex. Tens of thousands of dollars; thousands of meetings; hundreds of hours of planning; fifties of administrative approvals; tens of Ag IT staff members and ones of big bottles of aspirin. What is…..the completion of the county wireless project!

Tens of thousands of dollars; thousands of meetings; hundreds of hours of planning; fifties of administrative approvals; tens of Ag IT staff members and ones of big bottles of aspirin and we’re pleased to announce that all of the county extension offices that requested Penn State sanctioned wireless connectivity now have that service operational!  This has been a goal for Ag IT staff, extension administrators, District Directors and county staff for a number of years – to have a safe and secure wireless connection available for staff and the general public, and we’re pleased to close this project.

While the obvious parts of the project seem simple – a device or two on the ceiling and some wire – many upgrades to other pieces of equipment (in your offices and in ours) were prerequisites, requiring more dollars.  Network engineering and planning were extensive tasks to assure that your network and ours remained secure, especially when inviting the public to use this connectivity.  And finally, sending Ag IT staff into nearly every office to connect and test.  A big project, indeed.

Please remember that Penn State owned devices should connect to wireless using the psu-ext-staff option and personally owned devices – smart phones, tablets and laptops should use the psu-ext-public option.  The difference in usage of the two options is based not on employment status but ownership of devices.

We’re happy to partner with Extension to complete this project, and thank you for the roles you played in making it a reality.
