It Might be Below Zero Outside, But Summer’s Coming!

Although we’re still in the grip of Old Man Winter we know that spring is just around the corner, and soon you will be selecting and hiring your summer workers. With some advanced planning you can best be assured that your interns and program assistants will be able to use the computers and other IT resources on their start date or soon after.

Although we’re still in the grip of Old Man Winter we know that spring is just around the corner, and soon you will be selecting and hiring your summer workers.  With some advanced planning you can best be assured that your interns and program assistants will be able to use the computers and other IT resources on their start date or soon after.

As we have in years past, Ag IT is prepared to create computer accounts that will allow your seasonal support staff to use computers in your office.  At your request, and as you see the need, we can also create the ability for them to access your county’s shared files and printers, and we can create an exchange mail account that would give your summer assistants Penn State AG email addresses and calendar access.

Whether your summer help will need true Penn State access accounts or will be able to use Friends of Penn State accounts is still under discussion, but in either case we will still need some very basic information from you to create accounts – information including first and last name, anticipated start and ending dates for their employment and whether they should have shares access and/or e-mail.

To make the first day or week of employment most productive we’d like to be able to make sure that their computer is ready for their arrival.  Understandably the best computer in the office is not often assigned to the program assistant, but pre-planning what computers they will be using and getting them updated in advance will be helpful.  Remember that we no longer have the ability to image computers with the XP operating system in county offices, so if you are identifying an XP computer for your summer help we may only be able to tidy it up a bit, perhaps remove old or unnecessary files.  Windows 7 computers will be faster and more reliable for the interns, and can be imaged for a clean environment before simmer programming begins.

Please watch e-mail and future editions of IT Matters for more specifics as the ice thaws and the plants start to green!
