Share Large Files with a Remote Client
In some cases, the file may be too big to send via the College's Exchange server or Penn State's email server. In both cases, the maximum size of an email attachment (both incoming & outgoing) is 20 Mb. The College's list server application (Lyris ListManager) has a maximum message size setting for individual lists as well. By default, most lists have a maximum of 3 Mb while some have been increased to 10 Mb. Note, a 5 Mb message sent to a large list like CountiesExt or AdminNoticesUP will cause bounce back messages and may take an hour (or two) to completely deliver.
If you do need to share a large file securely and easily with an outside client, or with another person within Penn State, what can you do? Here are two cloud computing products that enable users to store and share files and folders with others across the Internet. Both have free and paid services, each with varying options. The free option is sizable enough to allow you to share large files
If you choose to use either of these options, you would go to their website, register, and follow their steps to setup an account.
Note: Prior to July 1, 2011, the Penn State Materials Research Institute (MRI) had a secure Dropbox Service for faculty and staff. This service is no longer available. See Dropbox End of Life Notice.
