About the Course

PSU-Spring Semester

The on-campus portion of the course emphasizes learning via lecture, guest presentations, individual research, and group discussion.  Most weeks will start with a presentation on one of the overarching topics by course faculty or a guest presenter.  The second class meeting each week will typically feature class discussion that builds on the presentation.  Sometimes, the discussion section might be partially devoted to language, cultural, or logistical issues.

Paris, France

The last two weeks of May, the class will travel to Paris for the summer program hosted by AgroParisTech (APT).  Many similar topics will be covered at APT via in-class lectures and guest presentations.  These discussions will be supported by several exciting on-site visits, which tentatively include the following:  Champagne vineyards and an agricultural high school, the Rungis wholesale market outside of Paris, the Versailles King's Kitchen Gardens, INRA (the French National Institute for Agricultural Research), an Organic Farm Share Program, and more.

 

Why Should I Participate?

 

Participants will gain a better understanding of the differences and similarities between the U.S. and French agricultural systems that is reinforced by a trip to Paris to learn about French agriculture first hand.  In addition, students will gain a cultural understanding of France, observe many sites in Paris, and the course can help fulfill the requirements of the INTAG minor.

 

How do I sign up? 

 

Students must fill out a short application and meet with an instructor before enrolling.

Cost and Payment Deadlines

All costs are estimated and are listed in U.S. Dollars.

  • Program fee (AgroParisTech administrative, organization, and program costs): $850
  • Airfare (round trip from the U.S. to the Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport in Paris, France): $1000 – 1,200
  • Train fare from airport to lodging in Paris and return at the program’s conclusion: $20
  • Metro transportation (two week pass): $60
  • Lodging (this is estimated and will be confirmed in early spring): $900
  • Food (dependent on how often student eat in restaurants vs. cooking): $400 – $600
  • International Health Insurance (policy for PSU students): $15 – 20
  • Optional museum entry fees (some museums are discounted on certain days): $15 – 30 each
  • Souvenirs and optional International cell phone/cell phone plan: varies

Payment Deadline

January 10, 2019: $850 Program Fee due

February 1, 2019: Airfare must be booked

February 1, 2019: $900 Lodging fee due

Eligibility

All students are eligible to participate, though preference will be given to College of Agricultural Science students.
