Service Learning Projects

Students will participate in a team-based service learning activity that applies research-based principles to a food, agricultural or natural resource issue, situation, and/or problem.

Scholars will be assigned to one of the team research-based service projects with about ten students on a team. Scholars will engage in the education, research, and planning of their project one day a week. Teams will present their project at the end of the program with a poster or presentation.

In the past, we worked with a variety of individuals in the agricultural sciences to give our scholars a truly unique service learning experience. Examples of service learning projects (SLPs) in which our scholars participated:

  • Landscape Contracting Program: Introduction to residential landscape design.
  • Agricultural Education Program: Surveying municipal trees to minimize public risk.
  • The Arboretum at Penn State: Children's garden project to maximize pollinator and native plant education.
  • The Sustainability Institute and Student Farm: Partnering food production with sustainable practices.
  • The Pasto Museum: Agriculture through history, how to create an educational display.
  • Water Quality Project: Evaluating the concentration of lead content in the contributed water samples.
