Arboriculture

The Arboriculture minor is designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of the arboriculture profession.

Combined with a major in Horticulture or Forestry, this minor will help prepare students for a career in arboriculture. The profession of arboriculture has many opportunities available in the application of arboricultural practices, sales, consulting, management of companies, and management of urban trees.

Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 20 credits. A grade of C or better must be obtained in each course to complete the minor. Course work includes arboriculture, disease and insect control, the planting and maintenance of plants in the landscape, and management of trees in urban environments.

Prescribed Courses: 15 credits

  • ENT 313 (2) Introduction to Entomology
  • ENT 314 (1) Management of Insect Pests of Ornamentals
  • FOR 401 (3) Urban Forest Management
  • HORT 201 (2) Applied Arboriculture
  • HORT/FOR 301 (3) Principles of Arboriculture
  • HORT 408 (4) Landscape Plant Establishment and Maintenance

Additional Courses: 5 credits

The student must select 2 credits in Plant Pathology:

  • PPATH 300 (3) Horticultural Crop Dieases
  • PPATH 318 (2) Diseases of Forest and Shade Trees

Students must select 3 credits in the following courses:

  • HORT 137 (3) Ornamental Plant Material
  • FOR 203 (3) Field Dendrology

Procedures for Enrollment

Students may apply for admission into the Arboriculture minor by completing and submitting an Entrance to Minor Form to room 118 Tyson Building. Approval by the student's major program adviser is required.
