Marcellus Shale has the potential to significantly affect workforce needs and employment opportunities across the 95,000 square mile Marcellus region. The employment impact shows more than 410 people across 150 different occupations are needed to complete each well. Where will these workers come from? How can Pennsylvanians get the necessary job skills to compete?
It is critical that Pennsylvania workforce development providers be prepared to meet the potential labor demand arising from Marcellus, and thus ensure that Pennsylvanians are able to take advantage of the new and increasing employment opportunities. The Marcellus Shale Workforce Forum is intended to bring together state agencies, workforce educational organizations, providers, and institutions from across the Commonwealth with the natural gas industry and others to learn more about the complexity of the oil and gas industry and their workforce needs, to identify workforce training needs, and to develop some coordination and cooperation among workforce providers to ensure that these needs are being addressed.
