Manage Lists: Tips / Q&A
A page of miscellaneous tips for using the ITS listserv in a question and answer format: viewing all subscribers, viewing list archives, determining which lists you are on, super lists and sub-lists.
HOW DO I GET A LIST OF ALL SUBSCRIBERS?
Via Web: (Option 1) Login and click on List Management and select LISTSERV Command. In the LISTSERV Command Interface, select a list in the dropdown menu and click "Review [list-name]".
Via Web: (Option 2) Login and click on List Management and select List Dashboard. Click on [View] in the Subscribers column of that list.
Via Web: (Option 3) Login and click on List Management and select Subscriber Management (see Editing or Deleting a Subscriber). Search for "." or "@" to view all subscribers. (Downside: you only get a small scrollable window to view email addresses/names.)
Via Email: Send a message to listserv@lists.psu.edu with "review [name-of-your-list]" in the body of the message.
HOW DO I VIEW THE LIST ARCHIVES?
To view the list archives, you must first assign yourself a login password.
Via direct address: http://lists.psu.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A0=[NAME-OF-LIST]
Via menus: At the home page (http://lists.psu.edu), click on Subscriber's Corner. In the Subscriber's Corner page, you may be asked to login. All the lists that you are subscribed to will be displayed if you are logged in. Click on the name of the list and the archives for that list will be displayed. By default, list archives are compiled by month.
Via menus for list owners: You can also view the list archive by clicking on "List Management" and selecting "List Dashboard". In the Dashboard screen, click on the name of the list. By default, list archives are compiled by month.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT LISTS I AM SUBSCRIBED TO?
Via Web: Login and click "Subscriber's Corner".
Via Email: Send a message to listserv@lists.psu.edu with "query *" in the body of the message.
(The email report contains more list information and is a bit confusing. If given a choice, I prefer the listing on web.)
WHAT IS A SUPER LIST AND HOW DO I FIND OUT IT'S SUB-LISTS?
A super list is a "parent" list that points to other "child" lists called sub-lists. It is possible for a super list to not display any subscribers because the sub-lists are configured in the internal list headers. To view what sub-lists are used by a super list:
-
Login to the ITS list server web interface.
-
Click on List Management -> List Configuration -> Manual List Configuration.
-
On the List Configuration page, look for the lines that begin with "sub-list =".
THE ITS LISTSERV DOES NOT INDICATE WHAT OTHER LISTS A MESSAGE WAS SENT TO. CAN THIS BE CHANGED?
No, unfortunately the ITS Listserv does not retain the original "To" line and only shows the list that sent the message to a subscriber. My only suggestion is to add some text at the top of the message to indicate that the message was sent to other lists. An example might be:
To: Department Faculty, Department Staff, Department Graduate Students
