Plone: Working Body Text and Creating Links

Throughout Plone you will find text editors that are used to enter information. You can format the text using a toolbar similar to the one shown below. This toolbar contains many buttons that you can use when you create and edit pages.

Most of the buttons on the toolbar look and function similarly to a word processing application. For instance, you select the text you want to format and then click the toolbar button to apply the format.

While most of the toolbar buttons will likely look familiar to you, there may be a couple that are unfamiliar.  Those buttons are described below.

Insert internal link (to another page within your Plone site) 

To use this button:

  1. Highlight the text you want to link
  2. Click the Insert internal link button (looks like chain link)
  3. Navigate to the website that you want to link to
  4. Select the radio button for the page for folder
  5. Click OK

Insert external link (including link to email address)

This allows you to link to an existing page outside your Plone site or to an email address. 

To use this button:

  1. Highlight the text you want to link
  2. Click the Insert external link button (globe icon)
  3. In the URL box, enter the website address that you want to link to
    • URLs must begin with "http://"
    • To link to an email address, remove the "http://" and use the following format: mailto:abc123@psu.edu
  4. OPTIONAL: Click Preview to verify that you entered the URL correctly
  5. Click OK
