Livestock judging team members learn to evaluate breeding and market classes of beef cattle, swine, and sheep.

The Livestock Judging Team is open to all Penn State undergraduate students. Most students that become members of the team have a strong interest in animal agriculture and its related industries. Students enrolled in livestock judging have the opportunity to visit, meet, and interact with the owners and managers of some of the most successful livestock operations in the country. Judging team members also have the opportunity to compete against universities all across the United States in contests that are held in conjunction with major industry events, such as:

  • National Western Stock Show (Denver, Colo.)

  • Penn State Block and Bridle Spring Judging Contest

  • All-East Livestock Judging Contest

  • Eastern National Livestock Expo (Timonium, Md.)

  • Keystone International Livestock Expo (Harrisburg, Pa.)

  • Stockman Contest (Frankfurt, Ind.)

  • American Royal Livestock Expo (Kansas City, Mo.)

  • North American International Livestock Expo (Louisville, Kent.)

Interested students should enroll in AN SC 324 (Value Determination of Meat Animals) in the fall semester of their junior year, followed by AN SC 424 (Livestock Breeding, Evaluation, and Selection) in the spring semester of their junior year, and AN SC 426 (Advanced Livestock Judging) in the fall of their senior year.
