Penn State Ag Alumni Society News

The Ag Alumni Society's mission is to connect, serve, and recognize alumni, students, and faculty by fostering relationships, commitment, and pride that characterizes our College. The society plays a vital role in supporting the college, students, and alumni programming. Alumni who graduated from the College of Agricultural Sciences become members of the Ag Alumni Society automatically by joining the Penn State Alumni Association.

Four alumni were recognized for their achievements with the College Outstanding Alumni Award. Named Outstanding Alumni were David Dell of Indiana; Barry Flinchbaugh of Kansas; and Fred Metzger of State College, Pa. Joel Krall, of South Lebanon, Pa., was named Outstanding Recent Alumnus, an award that honors alumni who have graduated in the last 10 years.

College of Agricultural Sciences alumnus, Ted Katsigianis '75g, '79 Ph.D. Animal Sciences was recognized with the lifelong title of Alumni Fellow, the highest award given by the Alumni Association. He is the vice president of agricultural sciences for The Biltmore Company.

Anthony J. Gilbert is an agricultural attaché for the Foreign Agricultural Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The ‘95 Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology grad helps to spread U.S. land-grant university knowledge and serve the best interests of U.S. agriculture overseas.

On June 25, 2016, meet 1984 College of Ag Sciences alumna and Philadelphia Zoo Nutrition Program Director, Barbara Toddes, to learn about red kangaroos and animal care in zoo settings. The Penn State Day Zoo registration includes breakfast at the Peacock Pavilion, playing with animals at the Zoo on Wheels, face painting, Barbara's presentation, and all day access to the zoo.

In 2014, the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society pledged $100,000 to create a new endowment in support of student scholarships. Now, the society is doubling down to enhance that fund by another $100,000 and help more students with their educational expenses.

On May 8, more than 550 attendees celebrated the 2016 College of Agricultural Sciences graduates prior to commencement at a luncheon held at the Penn Stater. The luncheon, hosted by the Ag Alumni Society, welcomed graduates into the alumni society family with a one-year complimentary membership.

Cara Boothroyd, a native of Endwell, New York, has been named 2016 Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences Outstanding Senior by the Ag Alumni Society. She was also chosen as the student marshal for the college's spring commencement ceremony, which took place at 3:30 p.m., on May 8, at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.
