Penn State Ag Alumni Society News

The Ag Alumni Society's mission is to connect, serve, and recognize alumni, students, and faculty by fostering relationships, commitment, and pride that characterizes our College. The society plays a vital role in supporting the college, students, and alumni programming. Alumni who graduated from the College of Agricultural Sciences become members of the Ag Alumni Society automatically by joining the Penn State Alumni Association.

The Ag Alumni Society offers a competitive awards program to encourage undergraduate students to participate in internship experiences. The Society recognizes the importance of a planned on-the-job learning experience to adequately prepare undergraduate students for today's competitive job market.

Student group advisor, Dan Azzara '84g, '86 Ph.D. Food Science led the Food Science Product Development Team to win national honors at the Dairy Research Institute's New Product Competition. Azzara is the Alan Warehime Professor of Food and Agribusiness, Armsby Honor Society member and a former Ag Alumni Society board member.

On April 25, thousands of soon-to-be Penn State graduates attended the Senior Sendoff at the Hintz Family Alumni Center. Dozens of students from the College of Ag Sciences stopped by the Ag Alumni Society table to learn more about the society, pick-up their complimentary t-shirt, and sign-up for the Berkey Creamery Ice Cream raffle hosted by the Ag Alumni Society.

Each year the Ag Alumni Society recognizes one student with the prestigious Outstanding Senior Award. The recognition is based on academic achievement, leadership in college clubs and organizations, an application essay, a personal interview with the selection committee, and an evaluation of their contributions to the University and community.

Dr. Robert Van Saun, Professor of Veterinary Science has been selected as the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Academic Advising Award. The award recognizes faculty with outstanding skills in undergraduate academic advising, career planning, and personal counseling. His nomination was supported by current students, alumni and Penn State faculty, and is a true tribute to the important impact he has had on the lives of students.
