Penn State Ag Alumni Society News

The Ag Alumni Society's mission is to connect, serve, and recognize alumni, students, and faculty by fostering relationships, commitment, and pride that characterizes our College. The society plays a vital role in supporting the college, students, and alumni programming. Alumni who graduated from the College of Agricultural Sciences become members of the Ag Alumni Society automatically by joining the Penn State Alumni Association.

Register today for the Alumni Ice Cream Social to get one of these great College of Ag Sciences magnets and enjoy Penn State Creamery ice cream. The ice cream social is Tuesday, August 18 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. during Ag Progress Days.

Seven College of Ag Sciences alumni began their new terms on the Ag Alumni Society Board of Directors on July 1, 2015. Congratulations to executive officers Eric Cowden (President), Danadee Miller-Boyle (President-Elect), Lisa Kirby (Financial Secretary) and Directors Mike Flinchbaugh, Duane Norman, Kristin Shust, and Emily Yeiser Stepp.

Eric Cowden, community outreach manager at Marcellus Shale Coalition, has been elected president of the Ag Alumni Society. He is a 2003 Agricultural Science graduate and has an MBA from Delaware Valley. Cowden will serve a two-year term beginning on July 1, 2015 along with two newly elected officers Danadee Miller-Boyle and Lisa Kirby.

For the lumberjacks and lumberjills of Penn State Woodsmen Cub, splinters and calluses are routine. But there's nothing routine about their sport, according team leaders. The "This is Penn State" crew visited the team at a practice about a half-mile north of campus, near the University's Living Filter spray fields.

Ballots for the Ag Alumni Society Board of Directors election must be postmarked by June 30, 2015. Only members of the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society are eligible to vote. Ballots were mailed to members in their Spring/Summer 2015 Penn State AgScience Magazine.

Javier Moreno '07 AEE was recognized with the Alumni Achievement Award in March. This is the highest honor presented to alumni 35 years of age or younger for their extraordinary professional accomplishments. See Javier's acceptance speech and photos from the award activities.

The Penn State Berkey Creamery is celebrating 150 years of service and will kick off anniversary festivities Sunday, May 24. Memorial Day weekend will mark the launch of a social media contest, allowing fans to select the Creamery’s special anniversary flavor, as well as the unveiling of designs celebrating the sweet occasion.

Amy Kraus, an animal science major from Aliquippa, Pa. has been recognized with the 2015 Outstanding Senior Award. This award, sponsored by the College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society and the Coaly Society, honors the senior who best balances outstanding academics, extracurricular activities, work experience and communication skills.

The Ag Alumni Society recognized Morgan Robins with the Outstanding Golf Course Turfgrass Management Student Award, a two-year professional certificate program, and Aaron Lewis with the Outstanding Forest Technology Student Award, a two-year academic major offered at Penn State Mont Alto.

We are looking for alumni volunteers. Giving back to your Alma Mater can mean a variety of things to each alumni -- speaking in a class, engaging alumni or collaborating with board members to plan alumni and student events. The next committee meeting is scheduled for April 25, 2015 and includes a working lunch.

Olivia Francois, Graduate Assistant for Recruitment along with two undergraduate students, Alyssa Maxwell and Molly Cashman attended the Big Ten Ag Alumni Reception and participated in meetings with the Council for Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching (CARET). CARET is a national grassroots organization that is a part of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). They also had a unique opportunity to network with alumni in Washington, D.C.

Javier Moreno, 2007 Ag and Extension Education is one of 12 prominent alumni, 35 years of age and younger to be recognized with the Alumni Achievement Award by the Penn State Alumni Association. He is manager of external affairs and communications for Toyota Motor North America, Inc.
