Joel Hunter is the Penn State Cooperative Extension Educator in Agronomy for NW PA based in Crawford County. He is a member of the Penn State Extension Crop Management Team (PSECMT). Joel’s primary professional interest is in developing no-till systems with cover crops and rotations for more economic and environmental sustainability. In the last few years that program effort has included locally pioneering work with canola and camelina oilseed production and development with recent interests in renewable energy. In the last few years, with the help from three successful grant applications, he has been directly involved with small groups of producers in several hundred acres of production of each.

Previous program focus included work on forage quality: particularly cool season grasses and corn silage hybrids, again with emphasis on no-till and sustainability. Joel has fostered and developed a popular Annual Regional No-till Conference for the past thirteen years which, along with other program efforts, has led to the adoption of significant no-till production in the most challenging region of Pennsylvania. His no-till work has taken him abroad to Kazakhstan, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

He received both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy from Penn State. Joel is an American Society of Agronomy Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and a member of the Pennsylvania Agronomic Education Society (PAES). For seven years, Joel was Production Manager for Seedway at Emmaus, PA producing hybrid seed corn, soybean seed, and small grain seeds. Joel served as Crawford County Extension Director for ten years, and he has been in his present position since 1995.
