Louis Swanson 1981 Ph.D. Rural Sociology

Louis Swanson of Fort Collins, Colo., rose to the rank of Full Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Kentucky from 1982 to 1997. He and his family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1997 where he served as chair of the Department of Sociology at Colorado State University. From 2005 to 2006, he served as associate dean in the university's College of Liberal Arts. In the Fall of 2006 Swanson became the first Vice Provost for Outreach and Strategic Partnerships. Among the units that he oversees are CSU Extension, the Division of Continuing Education, the Office of Economic Development, and the Colorado Water Institute. Swanson has edited or co-authored six books and more than 50 publications dealing with rural policy, agriculture and community change.
